National Astronomical Observatory of Japan Hand-Dyed Tenugui Hand Towel
The National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) original tenugui hand towel features designs of NAOJ's observational facilities in Japan and overseas, including the Subaru Telescope, ALMA Telescope, and Nobeyama 45-m radio telescope. Each piece is carefully dyed by hand by craftsmen using the "hand-printing" technique. [ColorTenugui Hand-Dyed Towels
Teknzome is a process in which a mold is made and colored glue is manually applied to the fabric to allow the color to penetrate the fabric. It requires a craftsman's skill to determine the degree of dye penetration. In addition, compared to the textile printing process, hand-printing is less susceptible to color fading and can produce fine patterns and other highly designed items. After dyeing, drying, steaming, washing, ironing, and other processes are carried out to complete the nugui.
